As I have just started working on a particularly huge database project I thought it about time to get a tool to help me design and update the database. Its to be constructed using MySQL. Having just completed a database design course I needed something that I could understand in the same terms that I had been taught. After a bit of searching I came up with dbwrench. Its a cross platform Java app that runs happily on my PowerBook, Ubuntu on my laptop as well as Windows 2K, which is a boost. It allows the user to design databases with a great degree of control, and the visualisations of the databases help a great deal. best of all though it can connect to the database server you are using and create or update the design on the server. Theres a 30 day trial and I think its about $150 for the full version, which i think is money well spent!!!
